Bedtime journal prompts: 30 gentle questions

It's late, you're tired, and a blank page is the last thing you need. Here are 30 small questions for the last few minutes of your day. Pick one. Write a short entry. Put the phone down.

There's no right answer and no wrong length. A few words count.

Tiny good things

  1. What was the softest moment of today?
  2. What made you smile, even a little?
  3. Who was kind to you today?
  4. What's one small thing that went right?
  5. What felt easier than you expected?
  6. What made you laugh?

Noticing the day

  1. What did today sound like?
  2. What did today smell like?
  3. Where was the light nicest today?
  4. What did you notice that you usually walk past?
  5. What did you eat today that you'd happily eat again?
  6. What surprised you today?

Setting it down

  1. What can wait until morning?
  2. What's still on your mind? Leave it here for tonight.
  3. What would you tell a friend who had your day?
  4. What are you ready to let go of tonight?
  5. What's one thing you got through today?
  6. What do you need a little more of tomorrow?

Just for you

  1. What's one thing you did just for you?
  2. What are you quietly thankful for tonight?
  3. What did you learn today, even something silly?
  4. Who do you wish you'd talked to today?
  5. What's something tiny from today you'd like to keep?
  6. What does your room look like right now?

Under the stars

  1. If tonight had a color, what would it be?
  2. What's the weather inside you right now?
  3. What song fits today?
  4. Describe today in three words.
  5. If you could put one moment from today in a jar, which would it be?
  6. What do you hope tomorrow feels like?

Too tired for any of these?

Then skip the question and just write what happened. One moment and how it felt is enough.

How to use these

  • Keep it short. A short entry is easy to write, even when you're sleepy.
  • Write in bed. Right before lights out is a good moment.
  • Dim the screen. If you write on your phone, turn the brightness down and close everything else first.
  • Missed a night? That's fine. Pick it up again tonight.
